Tsunami Inundation Maps

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has been developing tsunami hazard maps to help residents and councils prepare for a large tsunami.

We have provided answers to frequently asked questions about tsunami.

The latest maps from this project are available on this page as a PDF of the page published in local newspapers in August 2011.

IMPORTANT - These are overview maps only and are not specific enough to predict impact on your individual property.

New Zealand’s entire coast is at risk of tsunami. These maps show scenarios for Hawke’s Bay for tsunami coming from both a very large local earthquake or from across the Pacific Ocean. An event of this scale may happen on average only once in 2,500 years, i.e. this is one of the worst case scenarios.

The latest maps show the coast from Clive to Tangoio. Maps for Cape Kidnappers to Haumoana were completed last year and the community response planning is well underway. Wairoa response planning has started and more of that coastline will be completed later this year. Central Hawke’s Bay tsunami maps will be completed in 2012.

What now?

Community response plans are to follow. These modelled results for Clive to Tangoio will be used over coming months by Hastings and Napier councils working with local people to prepare community response plans and evacuation maps. If you are keen to be involved, please contact your local Council for information.

What should you do in a tsunami?

You can download the PDF page and keep it as a handy reference for planning your safety in a tsunami.
