| Refer to Central HB District Council Civil Defence to see a map of their centres. There is no hidden army! In the early days of Civil Defence the backbone of the volunteer network was the returned service men and women of the Second World War. Their combat experiences ensured that they had developed excellent planning, logistics and “man” management skills suitable for any occasion, and their friendship networks throughout each community enabled them to organise the community to respond when disaster struck. With the passing of the years many of these volunteers are no longer available and there are very few new volunteers offering their service. The demands of modern life are impacting significantly on so many of the organisations that contribute to our community, reducing the pool of willing volunteers and placing at risk our community’s ability to rally trained volunteers who know how to organise an appropriate response to disaster. If you are keen to volunteer find out more.
