Hawkes Bay Civil Defence Emergency Management Group

Theme for 2014 - "What would you do?"

We invited schools and their school community
to learn about natural disasters

Hawke’s Bay 'CDEM Group' wants everyone in Hawke’s Bay to know how to prepare for a natural disaster.
What is our risk of earthquake, flooding, tsunami and even a volcanic eruption?
Children also need to know what to do for their own safety.
SO, the suggestion was to make a movie - it's an active way to reinforce learning.

The 2014 Shortest Ever Disaster Movie Competition has now closed. The competition was open to all Hawke’s Bay schools with prizes in 3 categories: Primary, Intermediate and Secondary.

Following the judging of 16 entries 3 finalists have been selected.
• Omakere School – ‘Taking us Higher’
• Tamatea Intermediate – ‘A lesson in Earthquake Action’
• Takapau School – Earthquake Movie 2014

The overall winner will be announced at an Awards Ceremony to be held shortly.

“The entries this year were some of the best we have seen”, says Ian Macdonald, Group Manager and Group Controller for HBCDEM Group.

The movies from the three finalist's are below.

Omakere School - 'Taking Us Higher'

Tamatea Intermediate - ' A Lesson in Earthquake Action'

Takapau School - Earthquake Movie 2014

Just think: what would you DO...
- if you were at school and cut off by a flood for two days, would you be prepared?
- if you were at home and the power was off for several days, would you be prepared?
