In some emergencies, we may open an official Civil Defence Centre to provide information and services. As it is impossible to predict the effects of an emergency and our community's subsequent needs, we decide where to open a Civil Defence Centre when an emergency occurs. We will choose a safe location that is best placed to meet the needs of those most effected. This is likely to be a venue such as a community centre, hall or sports facility. We have some pre-identified locations, but those located at a school or in a high-risk area will be reviewed for their suitability, so this list may change in the future.
After any disaster, people want to help those in need. The community will naturally come together for company, to share stories about their experience, find out information, offer support to those who need it, and look for assistance. Some communities will establish their own community-led centres in a place that makes sense to them (it might be a marae, church or even the rugby club) and work together to meet the needs of their communities. They will be opened and run by people like you. Letting Civil Defence know what you are doing and if you need help or advice ensures we are able to support communities when they are looking after people and their animals following an emergency.
