Hawke’s Bay Civil Defence Emergency Management Group Appointments a Specialist Advisor to the Hawke’s Bay CDEM Joint Committee.

The Hawke’s Bay Civil Defence Emergency Management Committee has appointed Mr John Hamilton as an independent emergency management specialist member of the Committee. 

Mr Hamilton had a dedicated career in the Royal New Zealand Air Force that spanned 35 years and became the Director of the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management for 8 years.  He was the National Controller for the 2011 Christchurch earthquake response.  

Chairperson Hinewai Ormsby said “after interviewing several incredibly high calibre candidates, the Committee now welcomes John and values his extensive experience in CDEM as we move forward in implementing the recommendations of the reviews into Cyclone Gabrielle here in Hawke’s Bay. We acknowledge that John’s turangawaewae is based here in Te Matau a Māui and this is another strength that the committee will value immensely.

“We have already moved forward with a number of initiatives including supporting the development of 31 community and Marae led hubs across the region, with work on a further 40 progressing.  We have also been increasing our operational capability with 312 council and partner staff across the region attending emergency management training in the last 5 months.  John will add value to our role in overseeing the CDEM system in Hawke’s Bay into the future.”
