Civil Defence Centres

Civil Defence Centres (CDCs) are facilities managed by your local council that may be opened during an emergency to support affected communities. CDCs provide a safe place where people can access welfare services, including information, support, and assistance with basic needs.

Civil Defence Centres.

Civil Defence Centres (CDCs) are facilities that your local council may open during an emergency to support affected communities.

CDCs provide a safe place where people can access welfare services, including information, support, and assistance with basic needs.

Civil Defence Centres are not open at all times.

Your local council may open Civil Defence Centres during emergencies where people are displaced, unable to remain safely in their homes, or are unable to meet their basic needs. Decisions to open a Civil Defence Centre are based on assessed community need and the availability of resources to safely operate the centre.

In many situations, people can remain safely in their homes or stay with whānau and friends. Community support is often the first line of response, and a Civil Defence Centre may not be needed.

You will be advised through official channels (such as Council websites, social media, and radio) when a CDC is open and where to go.

What to do in an emergency.

  • If there is a threat to life or property, dial 111.

  • If it is safe to stay at your home, this is the best place to be.

  • If you need to evacuate or can’t get home, go to friends and whānau in a safe area if possible. If you cannot stay with friends or whānau, go to your closest Civil Defence Centre.

  • If you need assistance or information listen to the radio or visit the HB Emergency Facebook page
